Harold Engelking – My Grandpa

IMG_4107[1]It’s a weird feeling to be so sad and yet feel so blessed.

My grandfather passed away last night at the age of 93. He died peacefully in his sleep.

It’s hard to put into words how much i will miss him.

I’ll miss him calling me Dumpling.

I’ll miss never giving him another Farmer’s Almanac for Christmas.

I’ll miss him saying “I’ll go” no matter when or where anyone was going for whatever trivial reason. If someone needed company, he was your guy.

I’ll miss his love of politics. To the day he died, he could give you facts about any of the Presidents.

I’ll miss his compliments. And his ability to always say something positive.

I’ll miss his kindness most of all.

He set the bar impossibly high for men in my life.

At 6’4″, he was truly a gentle giant.

And he loved his family well.

Very well.

I know he’s in Heaven & that he’s in a much better place.

In fact, he probably picked last night to leave Earth so he could be in Heaven for the big ole party you know is happening up there celebrating Jesus on Easter Sunday.

See you again soon Grandpa.

Til then.

Love you.

Flat Stanley Meets Mister Derrick Brooks

Hi kids, this is my last post on Auntie Lynn’s blog. It’s a short one but very important.

Today, I got to meet one of Auntie Lynn’s favorite people, Mister Derrick Brooks. Before we met him, Auntie Lynn made me watch a video about him. She kept laughing the entire time during this video.

Mister Derrick Brooks is a huge NFL star and even has a Super Bowl Ring. He’s a very big guy and when we told people we were going to meet him someone said “Good thing you are already Flat, Stanley b/c on the football field, Derrick used to flatten his opponents”.

I didn’t really get that one but it must be a good joke b/c everyone laughed.

Anyway, after watching that United Way video I was a little scared to meet him but Auntie Lynn assured me that the video was just a joke and he was a really nice guy.

When I met him, Mister Derrick Brooks was very nice to me & told me he went to the same college as Auntie Lynn.

Auntie Lynn says Florida State is the best college in the whole wide world and she really hopes Kaleigh and Noah go to college there. Mister Derrick Brooks agreed with her.

I asked her if we could visit her college but Tallahassee, FL is almost 4 hours away from Tampa so there wasn’t enough time to visit this trip. Next time though, she promised to take me to a FSU football game so I can cheer on the NOLES as long as I bring Kaleigh and Noah with me.

Mr Derrick is President of the other team Auntie Lynn works for, The Tampa Bay Storm, they are an Arena Football team and Mr. Derrick and Auntie Lynn hope they can win a Arena Football Bowl and get championship rings of their own very soon.

Anyway, despite the scary video where he yells at kids, Mister Derrick Brooks was a really nice guy and it was great to meet him.

Flat Stanley Goes to a Lightning Game

Hi kids! Me again, Flat Stanley. I’ve taken over Auntie Lynn’s blog again to tell you all about my amazing day in Tampa with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Let’s start with the biggest news of all. Today, i met Steven Stamkos. He’s one of the best players in the entire NHL and he’s only 22 years old. He’s my new buddy. We got to hang out all morning at practice and it was so much fun to meet him and the rest of the team.

Today, The Tampa Bay Lightning played a home game. The game was a complete sell out. In fact, they’ve sold out all their hockey games so far this year. They have the most amazing fans and such great community support.

A sell out means no one could even BUY a ticket for the game tonight so I was SOOOO lucky to know Auntie Lynn. She snuck me into the game in her purse. It’s a good thing I’m flat so I could fit in with no problem.

First thing I had to do was learn the team mantra. Auntie Lynn made me repeat the mantra 27 times which is ALOT of times. The mantra is:

Choose Everyday! Get Worse, Stay the Same or Get Better

I don’t know about you but, I choose to get better.

Next, I had to get checked out by the Team Doctor.  I was nervous I wouldn’t pass the physical since I had really been exercising or eating alot of vegetables lately but I passed.

Barely though.

He made me eat a plate of spinach immediately after the exam and told me I really needed to start eating vegetables at least 3 times a day. Then he made me lift up the Stanley Cup 41 times. The Stanley Cup is the award for the best hockey team in the whole wide world. The Lightning won it in 2004 and are hopeful to win it again really soon. It’s really HEAVY and it took all my muscles to lift it up that many times.  It’s especially hard when you are flat like me. I learned today that whether you are an athlete or not, exercise and proper nutrition are very important to your success so you can grow up big & strong.

Finally it was time for the game. I was so excited I could barely stand it.

I saw ice for the 1st time ever and got to sit right on the players bench. Next, Auntie Lynn had me sit on a puck and she pretended like she was going to send me flying across the ice but she didn’t. Whew! I was nervous for a second there.

I got her back though b/c when she wasn’t looking I jumped on the equipment managers back and played hide and seek. It took her a whole hour to find me.

One of my highlights of the night was playing the HUGE hockey pipe organ. It’s so BIG and I got to sit right up there with the organist and play all these great hockey songs. It was so much fun.

My favorite part of the game was the tesla coils. They look like real lightning and light up everytime someone on the Lightning team makes a goal. They are so cool. I also really liked all the dancing. We danced the whole game.

Auntie Lynn told me that when Kaleigh was just a little girl she came to a game one time and just danced and danced and danced right in the middle of the aisle. Auntie Lynn said Kaleigh is a really good dancer. All i know is when I make it back to Raffles Grade 3C, I think we should have a dance party.

Anyway, I’ve had a long day. On game day’s Auntie Lynn works from 8 in the morning until 11pm at night so we are exhausted. Can’t wait to see what tommorrow brings.

Flat Stanley Visits Tampa (all the way from Dubai)

Here is a picture of  my sweet niece & nephew Kaleigh & Noah Wittenburg. It was taken the last time they visited Florida. I cried and cried when they left b/c i miss them so. They live in Dubai now and although they love it there, I miss them terribly and want them to move back!

Kaleigh sent me her friend Flat Stanley all the way from Dubai. It was a LONG trip for him. More than a month of travel time just to make it to the USA. I was so excited to get mail from Kaleigh and her class at Raffles school.

The rest of this post is written by Flat Stanley himself about his visit to Tampa specifically for the Raffles South Campus, Grade 3C class so enjoy! And next time you visit Flat Stanley bring Kaleigh & Noah with you!

Love – Auntie Lynn

Whew, I made it. It’s a long way from Dubai to Tampa, FL but I finally got here. After all that travel, I was starving so first thing Auntie Lynn did was feed me. Then, I decided to rest. It’s beautiful here in Tampa Bay and the weather is great so I decided to chill out by the pool. Since I don’t know how to swim, Auntie Lynn’s dog Koiya kept an eye on me so I wouldn’t drown. When I finally got inside, I was so tired I laid right down on the other dog Simba and took another nap. See the photo to the right. Auntie Lynn told me that one time Kaleigh’s brother Noah was so tired he laid down on Simba & took a nap too so I was right at home.

Monday couldn’t come soon enough. First, I was told I had to drive into work. I think Auntie Lynn was lazy. Either that or she just likes to be driven around.  It was a little scary but with her help I drove without getting any tickets or any car crashes.

Next up, was a day at the office. Auntie Lynn works for a hockey team called the Tampa Bay Lightning. Working in sports is HARD work. Auntie Lynn runs a tight ship. I had to do hours and hours of work for her helping her market the Lightning.

Here’s a picture of me making all the marketing decisions. Auntie Lynn said she was going to the spa for the day and I should just do the best I could do. It was lightning and stormy all day in Tampa so I got inspired to make this commercial called Electricity while she was out.

After a few day’s of really hard work, I got introduced to my new friend, ThunderBug. He’s the official mascot of the Tampa Bay Lightning. One day we went to Metropolitan Ministries and helped out. Auntie Lynn said it’s very important to volunteer and to give back and that they do alot of that at work thanks to their amazing owner.

I had a blast with ThunderBug. He’s so funny even though he doesn’t speak English or a language that any human can understand. He’s also HUGE. He is one very BIG BUG as you can tell from our photo. He’s my new best friend in Tampa Bay.

You can learn more about ThunderBug by checking out his website. In fact, he even has a FREE Kid’s Club that anyone can join. Even kids all the way in Dubai. I signed up Kaleigh and Noah right away so they’ll be hearing from him soon.

That’s it for now kids, it’s been a very long few days. I have to go to bed early as tommorrow I’m going to my very first Lightning game. I’ll write more soon.

Lent – and Giving Up Vices

40 days ago i stopped biting my nails. I’ve been biting my nails since birth and just stopped cold turkey. I”m not even sure why I did it other than I wanted to see if I could.

See picture to the left. Not impressive if you don’t know me but if you do, you should be VERY proud of me. it’s a big deal. Just ask my parents!

Anyway, the point is I stopped doing something for 40 days and now, it’s not this pressing annoying habit thing i do anymore.

Which leads me to Lent. I’m a Christian but not Catholic so I’ve never really done the whole Lent thing. Not that I’m against sacrifice or anything it just wasnt’ something I do.

In fact, as i was having a discussion this week with friends about the whole concept, i did some light research (google, FB) on what it means. There were a million opinions but below is the meaning, i related to the most.

by Frederick Buechner~
————————————————————
In many cultures there is an ancient custom of giving a tenth of each year’s income to some holy use. For Christians, to observe the forty days of Lent is do the same thing with roughly a tenth of each year’s days. After being baptized by John in the river Jordan, Jesus went off alone into the wilderness where he spent forty days asking himself the question what it meant to be Jesus. During Lent, Christians are supposed to ask one way or another what it means to be themselves.

If you had to bet everything you have on whether there is a God or whether there isn’t, which side would get your money and why?

When you look at your face in the mirror, what do you see in it that you most like and what do you see in it that you most deplore?

If you had only one last message to leave to the handful of people who are most important to you, what would it be in twenty-five words or less?

Of all the things you have done in your life, which is the one you would most like to undo? Which is the one that makes you happiest to remember?

Is there any person in the world, or any cause, that, if circumstances called for it, you would be willing to die for? If this were the last day of your life, what would you do with it?

To hear yourself try to answer questions like these is to begin to hear something not only of who you are but of both what you are becoming and what you are failing to become. It can be a pretty depressing business all in all, but if sack-cloth and ashes are at the start of it, something like Easter may be at the end.

Source: Frederick Buechner , Whistling in the Dark: An ABC Theologized, pp.74-75.

So, my non-religious take on it is to try to make yourself a better version of you in the next 40 days. With that in mind, here’s what I’m doing.

1.Diet. I eat like crap so for the next 40 days, i’m giving up white flour and white sugar. Hopefully this leads to weight loss and healthier meals.

2. Exercise. For the next 40 days I will exercise 30 min/day (even if it’s just walking the dogs)

3. Mind. i’m going to journal for the next 40 days. Often, i get the most clarity when I write down what i’m thinking.

So, wish me luck! It worked with my nails so we’ll see how it goes. Happy Lent.

Why I’m running another 500 miles this year…

I actually think of myself as a creative person. It may not be evident since I’m launching the same running goal for myself as I did last year. But, cut me some slack i have a hockey season to prepare for!

You can read all about my running 500 miles journey of 2012 here. And here. And the victory recap is here.

So, why if I accomplished this am I doing it again? The answer is simple.

1. I like to set goals and achieve them.

2. I actually like spreadsheets. Back when I was 7, i had a similiar spreadsheet my Dad made me except it tracked all the winnings of the Price is Right contestants so I could see which one actually really got the biggest price. Yes, I’m a competitive dork.

3. I like accountability.

4. I like to inspire others and hear about their successes.

For all these reasons (plus the fact many of you have been all over me to come up with something for 2013 and i tend to react well to peer pressure), I’m back at it.

Same rules apply. Same prizes apply monthly.

If you want in, all you have to do is send me your email and i’ll give you the link to the spreadsheet.

Happy Running!

PS – i have also added a side goal of completing 3 half marathons this year. I know I’m doing Chicago in July and Savannah in November. Am still debating others so i am stepping it up a notch (kind of). HA!

Why Running is a Mental Game…

I did it.

I committed to run 500 miles in 2012 and as of 7:45pm on December 2nd, i have hit that goal. Yeah, me!

Back in January, I made the following pledge. And over 100 people joined me. The concept was simple.

MOVE MY BODY.

Average 10 miles per week for 50 weeks. Some weeks I ran NO miles, one day, I ran 13.1 during the Disney Half Marathon (see pic above)

Only rule was you had to be going at least a 15 min/mile pace so while walking would count it had to be fast (not walking your dog). For the record, I ran 500 miles at an average pace of 11:27 for the year.

Halfway into the journey, I wrote this.

As of today, there are only 12 of the original 125 that still have a prayer of getting to 500 miles. As you can see, it was not an easy task.

Here’s what I learned:

1. Running is mental. I rarely ever felt like it. If i didn’t mentally decide I was going to run come hell or high water the night before my body usually won and talked me out of it.

2. The first step is exactly that. Take the first step. Move. Put on your shoes and go outside and just take one step at a time.

3. A “runners high” is an elusive thing. I can honestly say I can count on 1 hand the few times I ran and felt great. Like I was Forest Gump on maybe 2 occassions where I didn’t want to stop running. Considering I have done almost 200 runs this year, feeling amazing a handful of times is not great odds.

4. Life is in the journey. For me, running allows me time to reflect. In today’s busy world, i don’t get this often so this is definitely a benefit.

5. I never regretted a run AFTER it was done. I’ve never heard a runner say they were sorry they went running. Which is why it’s mental.

So, that’s it. I’m going to take a little break and reflect on what my next running goal will be. One thing I do know is, there will be a next goal. And i highly encourage everyone to put on some running shoes and get out there.

La Tomatina Festival

It’s virtually impossible to put my experience today into words. So, I’ll do my best to show you via video.

Let’s start with the obvious. I’m in Bunol, Spain for the La Tomatina Festival. I’ve always wanted to do it and it just so happened my vacation coordinated with the timing of this event.

All i knew going in was it was a tomato fight. People forgot to mention the 4 hour waiting in the sun on crowded streets.

If you are claustraphobic, this event is not for you. I have now seen multiple people hyperventilating CLOSE UP and i was freaked out just watching them. If you don’t like crowds and tight spaces, do not go.

Now that we got the disclaimer out of the way…

It all starts around 9am with a bunch of idiots trying to climb up a greased pole to get a ham. Yep, you heard that right.

There is not enough alcohol in the world to get me up that pole or anywhere near those boys fighting each other and the greasy pole. And for those of us incentive based, want to know what the lucky guy who get’s up the pole wins? the freaking Ham hanging off the top & of course the notariety!

Once the ham has been had, you head over to get in line for the tomatoes. Let the fight begin! Or at least that’s what we thought. But then, this happened.

that’s right, you pretty much just stand there while people in that truck throw tomatoes at you.

Let me say this, after waking up at 6am, waiting around in crowded streets for 4 hours (Tip: get there by 9am or they won’t let you in the city) and then being in a stampede only to see this truck throwing tomatoes at us, we were all very disappointed and had pretty much decided the whole thing was a bust.

But then a great thing happened. A street fight broke out. Think water balloon fight with tomatoes. It was kind of awesome really. It all eventually ended up looking like this:

Thousands of people getting pelted with tomatoes. It was insane. And for me, totally worth it.

Here’s what I learned:

1. If you have a IPhone people will purposely throw tomatoes at you while you are trying to film. Basically, b/c they are jealous that you are awesome and bought a waterproof case so you can document this event, you are now a moving target and will get hammered.

2. A tomato thrown hard to the back of your head hurts.

3. Tomato juice in your eye’s burn.

4. It is possible to get tomato bits down your actual ear lobe and find them after you shower.

All that being said, it was awesome.

To quote my friend “this is like Gasparilla confined to a 4 block radius”. Those in Tampa will know what that means.

Definitely not for everyone but I’m glad i did it.

NewsFlash: Rome is in Ruins

Ruin Exhibit A: The Colisseum. (it is AWESOME)

Now, I could bore you to death with a ton of photos of churches, old dilapidated buildings and art all of which in person is AH-Mazing.

However, none of my photos (even this awesome one to your left)will do it justice and since we now have a little thing called Google which has way better images of all of this than I do, I have decided instead to do a blog on random things to know about Rome.

Since, I’m a firm believer that everyone should visit Italy in their lifetime, here are some tips that will help you travel here.

Trust me, this is all the stuff you can’t find in the books but it’s helpful to know.

So, here we go in no particular order. You can thank me later!

  • There are over 1 Million scooters in Rome. You see about 3 of them for every car. In fact, I think the city buses are more prevalent than cars. My point is these scooters are dangerous so watch yourself crossing the streets. And do not bother renting a car.
  • This fact is for my Arena/Sports friends. Watch out, i’m about to drop some knowledge on you :) The colisseum originally had a layer of sand on the top b/c that would help soak up the blood of the dead animals and Gladiators (gross right?) Anyway, the latin word for Sand is ARENA which is why all arena’s are named that today.
  • The tour bus is FUN and a great way to see the city.
  • Rome is comprised of 7 hills. Walking around is comparable to San Fran.
  • All Italian men try to kiss you on the check upon seeing you. Both cheeks. Apparently this is normal but I still don’t like it. The good news is if you let them (especially wait staff and restaurant owners, this usually amounts to free drinks and sometimes free dinner)
  • In August, it is HOT. And I’m from Florida and it’s still HOT. Bring LOTS of water with you at all time. All of vendors will sell water that is FROZEN. Get that kind as it will melt in 30 min and will be a lot more refreshing.
  • Wine is super cheap. If you drink wine, you will be very happy in Rome. Excellent wines at the same prices as Boones Farm J
  • Pinocchio is a really big deal here. You will see him in all the gift shops. Stock up!
  • All meal are 4 courses and there is no rush what-so-ever when it comes to services so just relax and enjoy the meal. They are in no rush to get you out of a restaurant.
  • I have not tried it but people will drink water from anywhere. Fountains, faucets on the side of streets. It does not seem sanitary to me but yet everyone does it. I was in a fountain and someone came and dipped there water bottle next to where I was standing.
  • There are a lot of ruins with nothing to see. Circus Maximus and the Forum are good examples of this. Read a history book and look online and save yourself the time if you are pressed. There are much better things to see.
  • If you order seafood it will come with it’s head on and eyeballs in. Be prepared.
  • The food is unreal. What they serve in the states is NOT real Italian. The cheese & pasta is truly amazing. I will come back here just for the food.
  • The toilet seats have no rims. Which makes for a very large seat. Which means you could fall in the toilet if you aren’t careful. Don’t ask me how I know this.
  • Blue jeans are actually from Genoa, Italy. They were the first to create the indigo dye and so jeans (Genoa) were named after them.
  • I would recommend the Roma Pass but only if you aren’t going to pay for tour guides. It’s worth the price b/c you get to skip all the lines.
  • There is no real homeless here like in other countries or people asking you for money. It’s refreshing.
  • For some reason, people seem to know we are American on site.
  • Gelato here is actually healthy and can be eaten 3-4 times a day. Half of this sentence is a lie J

Chow!

Why I’m running 500 miles in 2012…

I wish there was some heroic reason for me deciding to run 500 miles this year. And I wish I currently looked like this girl to the left. But neither of those things are true.

The unfortunate truth is I’m competitive. So, i do better when I can measure against others.

And I was tired of sitting on my butt during a LONG hockey season and not making time to exercise.

So, on Jan 1 when I was setting my goals, the idea to challenge my friends and co-workers to attempt #500milesin2012 just seemed like a great idea. And it some days it really was.

Over 100 people committed to run. Apparently, alot of people felt the same way I did and needed some motivation.

And guess what? Inspired by my blog, WigWam socks donated a pair of socks for each of the runners. They came in a huge box to my office. Now, THAT is cool!

In fact, it was one of the coolest emails I’ve ever gotten. Who knew a company like that cared about the little people.

And the socks, holy cow! There truly is a difference. I will never run in another sock again. In fact, I don’t even call them socks. I call them “running cradles”.

Thank you Wigwam! The people’s choice :)

Currently, we are over 1/4 of the way there. I’ve personally run 160 miles in 4 months. As a group we have run over 5000 miles. If you are doing the math, you can tell we’ve lost some people. We are down to about 40 core runners.

Probably because it’s not easy.  On the surface, 10 miles/week seems relatively simple.

Simple to do like once. Every week for 52 weeks is a different story. It’s tough.

Truly a mental game each week.

But, i keep going b/c I came up with this idea. Plus, alot of you when you aren’t cursing my name have sent me very encouraging notes about what this running challenge has done for you. So, thank you for all those participating.

And it’s not to late to join the challenge.
